Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions families ask us most. If you don't find what you need here, please reach out — we're always happy to talk.
How does commissioning a handmade urn work?
You begin by sending us a message — a few
lines about the companion you're remembering is plenty. We match your
story with the craft that fits — made by Kim, or one of our circle of
artisans — and you talk with your maker directly about materials,
ideas and price. Nothing is made, and nothing is owed, until you're
happy with the plan.
How long does a commission take?
Most urns are made and delivered within three to six weeks, depending
on the craft — thrown and glazed stoneware needs two firings; timber
needs time for finishes to cure. If you need an urn sooner, tell us:
several makers keep signature designs ready to personalise and ship
within days, and ashes rest safely with your vet or crematorium — or
at home in their interim container — in the meantime. There is no
deadline in remembering.
What size urn do I need?
As a guide, allow roughly 35 to 40 millilitres of capacity for each
kilogram your pet weighed — around 200 millilitres for a small cat,
and a little over a litre for a 30-kilogram dog. Your maker will
confirm sizing before starting, and keepsake sizes are available
when ashes are being shared among family.
Do you handle ashes?
No — every urn arrives empty. Ashes are returned to you by your vet
or pet crematorium, usually in a sealed container that transfers
simply into your urn at home. Most crematoriums will happily do the
transfer for you, quietly and without charge. The one exception is
our blown glass work, where a maker can incorporate a small portion
of ashes into the glass itself — we'll guide you through that
process carefully if you choose it.
Can the urn be personalised?
That's the heart of what we do. Engraved names and dates are only the
beginning — we've matched a glaze to a cockatiel's feather, set a
collar tag into a timber lid, and carved a paw print from a clay
impression. Share the story; your maker will find the form.
Who are the makers?
Most urns are made by Kim, our founder and lead artist, in the
Bungendore workshop. The rest come from a small circle of fellow
Australian artisans — potters, woodworkers, glass artists, weavers
and metalsmiths — each invited after a review of their craft and
the care they bring to commemorative work. You can read about them
on Our Makers, and you'll always know
exactly who is making your urn.
How is delivery handled?
Finished urns are inspected, packed with care and sent fully insured
anywhere in Australia, with tracking shared as soon as they leave the
workshop. Delivery is included in every price. If you're overseas,
write to us — international delivery can usually be arranged.
Are there options for burial, scattering or water?
Yes. Our woven willow and Bloom biodegradable designs are made to
return gently to the earth, and specific water-committal versions
are available. Rules for scattering and interment vary by state and
council, so check locally — we can point you to the right guidance
for your area.
Can ashes be shared among family members?
Many families choose this. Makers can craft a matching set — one
principal urn and several keepsake companions in the same material
and finish — so everyone keeps a part of them close, in pieces
that clearly belong together.
What if the finished urn isn't right?
Handmade work varies — that's its beauty — but it should never
disappoint. You'll approve sketches and photos along the way, and if
the finished piece still isn't right, we will work with your maker
to remake or refund it. No family is ever left with an urn they
don't love.
